A Word For 2016

A Word For 2016

…The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.—Obadiah 1:17

Be strong in your heavenly Father’s love for you and possess your possessions—good health, provision, wisdom, favor, protection, restored relationships . . . every blessing already paid for by our Lord Jesus at the cross!

This is the uplifting message the Lord gave me to share with His people right at the start of this year.

Possessing Our Possessions in 2016

Beloved, 2016 is the year the Lord wants to bring you out of a place of stress and strife, worry and anxiety, lack and bitterness into His promised land for you where you will be protected and well-provided for. And through a study of the biblical account of the children of Israel on the threshold of entering their promised land, He revealed both His heart of love as well as the keys we need to walk in His vision for us.

Scripture tells us that when God brought the children of Israel out of slavery in Egypt, He already had in mind and prepared for them a luscious, fruitful land. It was a land flowing with milk and honey, “a land for which [they] did not labor, and cities which [they] did not build, and [they] dwell in them; [they] eat of the vineyards and olive groves which [they] did not plant” (Joshua 24:13).

In this land, God’s people would go from gathering garlic, onions, and leeks (foods in Egypt that required backbreaking labor to get, a picture of supply through toilsome labor), to picking and eating huge clusters of grapes, figs, olives, and pomegranates.

The difference? These were fruits His people could just reach out for, pick and eat—a picture of restful supply. And because God had already given them the land, all they had to do was to go and take it. Wherever their feet would tread, every good thing there was theirs to possess and enjoy.

Today, this is also God’s heart and desire for us—to step fully into our promised land and possess all the supply, protection, peace, restored relationships, healing, and health He has already prepared and blessed us with through the cross of Jesus!

What a wonderful promise to be able to enter His promised land of rest and enjoy abundant provision, fruitfulness, and God’s protection without any backbreaking labor and stressful toil! And as God shows us His desire and heart for us, His beloved children, He also shows us in this very story of the Israelites’ journey to the promised land the keys to possessing our possessions.

In Numbers 14, we see how the doubting majority of the children of Israel did not believe God as they saw and were afraid of the giants in the land. Only Joshua and Caleb saw the giants as “bread” because the giants’ “protection has departed from them, and the Lord is with us” (Num. 14:9).

God called their “let’s trust God and go possess our possessions” attitude a “different spirit”, a spirit of faith. Where the other 10 spies saw themselves as grasshoppers, insignificant and unable to take on the giants, Joshua and Caleb saw the Lord bigger and stronger than the giants and well able to keep His promise to them. And because they had this different spirit, they were the only two of their generation of Israelites to enter their promised land. The others spent the next 38 years wandering in the wilderness because of their unbelief.

This year, the Lord is telling us that we will possess our possessions just by resting and trusting in a God Who is bigger than any giant that stands in our way, and in His Word that spells out all His promises for us. We’ll possess our victory and blessings when we look through the eyes of faith beyond the giants to our bigger and stronger God, see our giants as bread, and choose to rest in His finished work that has already secured the victory and every blessing for us.

So whatever the giants in your life—a physical condition, an addiction or bondage, a situation at home or at work, or just being fearful about the future—your heavenly Father is saying to you, “Do not fear them.” Look to Him and lean on His love to bring you into your promised land where you will see the fulfillment of His promises in your life, and inherit all that Christ died to give you.

And what of the giants you see now or may stand in your way? Instead of them devouring you, they will be your food! All that you need to overcome them has already been provided for you by your Father in heaven. As you look to Him and receive from Him, He will turn them into “bread”—food to strengthen your faith and bring increase to you!

Dear friend, may this year be one of having a greater revelation of God’s love for you, a deeper intimacy and closer walk with the Lord, peace that passes understanding, and joy that overflows as you step into God’s promised land!

Get ready to possess your possessions!

Looking through the eyes of faith,
