Paid Off Debts, Spending More Wisely
I first heard of Pastor Prince when I was working in Singapore 20 years ago. I was a Christian then but was visiting different churches and had not settled down in one. The Bible and praying didn’t appeal to me, and I always felt something wasn’t right with what I was hearing. I tried to blend in but could not.
Coming from a poor family, I didn’t have connections to help with my tertiary education. I received a student loan after coming back from Singapore and began to study. I was always short of money but believed God would send help, or I could ask my family for help.
However, I foolishly spent money without prudence and continued doing so even after I started working. I was offered a credit card and that was the start of the many debts I would accumulate over the years.
One day, after chancing upon one of Pastor Prince’s books in a Christian bookstore, my fiancée and I started listening to Pastor Prince’s sermons sent to me by a sister-in-Christ a year ago. Once we started listening to the grace message, there was no turning back.
My fiancée and I started tithing immediately after hearing a sermon on tithing. We got married but were still heavily in debt due to our careless spending. Our debt situation became so bad that we could not pay our monthly installments. We literally had debt collectors knocking on our door. I had to sign up for a debt management program, and as a result, all my credit cards were cut.
But God is good! He provided new job opportunities every few years at prestigious companies who were willing to offer me 30 percent pay increments in their packages. The Lord continued to lavish His grace upon me. How unmerited is this grace? It could only be the favor of the Lord that covers us like a shield!
Then, things became uncertain when I lost my job. I remember holding the “big envelop,” driving home in tears but still singing, “How great is our God.” I considered doing odd jobs, business ventures, investments, or settling with whatever job offer I was given because I was worried I would not be able to pay off our debts when the compensation money ran out. But my wife told me to rest in the Lord and “do nothing” because my health wasn’t good due to the stress of it all. I struggled to rest, but I let go and agreed to take a break.
During this time, my wife and I became more cautious about our spending. The Lord taught us how to use money wisely. When our money was about to run out, He prepared a wonderful opportunity at a prestigious company. We prayed about the offer, and through the leading of the Holy Spirit, I decided to accept it despite there being another offer that was better. When I accepted the offer, I remember counting the number of years I’d have to save before I could settle all our debts. There was still a long way to go.
Then, COVID-19 happened. I was able to work from home a lot and as a result, we spent next to nothing. Our mountain of debts began to flatten month after month.
We are very happy to testify that before the end of 2021, the Lord had helped us pay off our 6-figure debt, including a large sum of money we borrowed from family! To our surprise, we have somehow also saved up a 6-figure amount. All praise be to God our Abba and Jesus our Savior!
We are so happy to start the year with no debts (except for our mortgage) and with money to buy clothes and good food for the first time. I believe this is the result of years of listening to the gospel of grace. We no longer have to look for spare change lying around our house to make ends meet or to celebrate Chinese New Year. How wonderful is our Abba Father!
We now enjoy listening to sermons every week, praying together frequently, and partaking of the holy Communion twice a day. We also became Gospel Partners because it is such a wonderful privilege to participate in God’s work to let the world hear the message of grace. We are looking forward to seeing the rest and acceleration our Abba Father has for us in 2022.
Thank you, Pastor Prince, for preaching Jesus and establishing us in the truth that sets us free. May the Lord bless you and your family with peace and protection, and may many souls be impacted by the wonderful gospel of grace!
