In November 2008, I was being treated for a thyroid condition. Unfortunately, the treatment made me very ill.

After six weeks of no sleep, losing 30 pounds and not eating well, a specialist took me off the treatment. He informed me that if I were to continue the treatment, it could kill me. The specialist changed the treatment and I was told to expect a long recovery.

By then, I was physically exhausted and in a deep depression. During those weeks, I was praying to God for healing. My family also prayed and laid hands on me but nothing seemed to work!

One day, I told my wife that God doesn’t care for me and asked her to remove all the Bibles from our home. My wife, being the wise soul she is, set the Bibles aside and said I would change my mind later. Of course, she was right.

The next day, my wife forced me out of the house to try to ease my depression. I agreed reluctantly and we went to a bookstore as this has always been one of our favorite places. However, I wasn’t feeling enthusiastic. As it was, I barely had the strength to walk.

We usually head to the fiction and religion sections in the bookstore but this time, I was determined to bypass the religion section as I was still angry with God over my situation. However, it didn’t happen the way I had planned.

On my way to the fiction section, I saw this book on an end cap that caught my attention. The guy on the cover reminded me of a childhood mentor. But that book was in the religion section so I decided not to pick it up and went on to find something else in the fiction section. I couldn’t find anything there and eventually went back to get the book that had caught my attention. And yes, I purchased it. That book was Joseph Prince’s book, Destined To Reign.

That night, I started to read the book. A few chapters in, I started to feel a sense of peace and my anger with God started to lift. The book detailed God and Jesus in a way that was different from my beliefs. I finally understood what grace truly meant. “Grace”—what a wonderful word!

I can’t say I was miraculously healed at that point, but my attitude certainly changed and I was at peace for the first time in weeks. It was a peace I had never experienced until that night and my healing was rapid from that point on.

My follow up appointments with the specialist were very positive. He was pleased and somewhat surprised at how quickly I was regaining my strength. As I am writing this, I am completely healthy and don’t even need treatment for my thyroid anymore.
