Peace and Protection during Hurricane Irma

I want to thank Pastor Prince for writing the book, The Prayer of Protection. I was led to listen to the audio version just a week prior to Hurricane Irma. At that time, I listened to 1 chapter a day.

While listening, I would meditate on the verse quoted for the chapter. I also read aloud Psalm 91 and declared the prayer of protection over my life, my family, my possessions, and my finances. Little did I know this was preparing me for what was to come.

News about Hurricane Irma impacting Florida over the weekend caused many of my colleagues to be fearful, worried, and anxious. Some co-workers traveled out of the state to stay out of harm’s way as the news had reported that it might be a category 5 hurricane. One colleague told me to prepare myself and another warned me that there was no water available in the stores.

When I headed out to the stores to get extra water and canned foods, all the shelves in the first 2 stores were already emptied. In the third store, consumers could only purchase 4 units of one-gallon water.

I immersed myself in Psalm 91, confessing and declaring good over the situation. I also decided not to listen to the news since that would fill me with fear. I kept myself conscious of the truth of the Psalm 91 verses I was meditating on. I quoted Psalm 91:7 to my mother and one of my brothers who called in to check on me. God also brought to memory an incident during my childhood in which He protected me from harm when an earthquake hit my home country, Panama.

Friday came along and turned out to be sunny all through till Saturday. Early Sunday morning, it began to rain and the wind started to blow in the afternoon. When fear crept in, I quoted Psalm 91:7. I also sang praise songs and listened to faith-filled teachings. I only read the news a few times briefly, and I was able to sleep and wake up in peace every day.

I can boldly say that God brought me safely through this event. Although many people in my area had their electricity and water supply cut off and their houses were damaged, I am happy to report that I had power and water during and after the hurricane, and there was no damage to my house.

Monday came along and turned out to be a sunny day. My trust and confidence in God have increased and I shall never forget the shalom-peace I’d experienced in the midst of the hurricane despite all that was happening around me. Praise be to God!
