Collison Averted on Snowy, Icy Highway
My son is an over-the-road big rig/box truck driver. One day, he was on his way home from delivering a load in Pennsylvania. The roads were snowy, slushy, icy, and slick. A car in front of him and a car on the right side of his truck began to spin out of control. The car in front spun out, came to a complete stop, and ended up sitting in the lane with the passenger side facing his truck.
My son was going at approximately 60 miles an hour. He began to employ all the safety measures taught in truck driving school: Never slam on the brakes, pump the brakes to slow the vehicle down, and engage flashers/caution lights to warn traffic behind him to slow down because trouble was ahead. While taking these precautions, he continued barreling down the highway, bracing for impact.
He looked to his right and saw that the car beside him had regained control and pulled over. In that same moment, he said he didn’t know what to do. Another thought from his training came to mind: Never change lanes, just continue and hit whatever is in your path. But at the very last moment, when he looked right again and saw the lane was clear, he changed lanes and completely missed the car sitting in his path.
Although the road was slippery and the weather cold and snowy, none of the conditions caused his truck to lose control. He thought for sure the tail end of the truck would clip the car, but there was no damage to any vehicle.
When my son pulled over to check on the driver, the driver had jumped out of his car. He ran to my son with open arms in tears and hugged him, saying, “You missed me! You missed me!” He said, “I saw you coming. I didn’t have time to move. I just sat there, closed my eyes, and braced for impact, but you missed me!” My son said, “I don’t know how, but I did completely miss you!” Then both of them gave all the glory to God and went on their way.
All my children are adults. I pray the prayer of protection (Psalm 91), receive the Holy Communion, and pray in the Spirit nightly for myself and my entire family. I also plead the blood of Jesus over each of them and their vehicles. Thank you, Pastor Prince, for your revelation and preaching of the gospel of grace, which has truly transformed my life.
